Someone Else’s Shopping List- The Story Behind The Song

I love how certain objects or seemingly simple events are really portals to a much more nuanced narrative. Such is the case with the song that dropped today, “Someone Else’s Shopping List”.

As the name implies, the song is about someone else’s grocery shopping list. I found it in an empty shopping cart in the parking lot of the supermarket during the pandemic. Since we were deep into the first lock down of 2020, the little piece of paper made me feel strangely connected to another human being. I was in the throes of learning to produce and finishing up the writing of the album (*) so I tucked it in my purse with the intention of one day turning it into a song.

A couple of years later, more confident in producing, I composed it around drum loops, to which I added bass and guitar layers. I think it was the first song I wrote this way. I liked how even though technically I didn’t write the lyrics, enmeshing myself in someone else’s shopping list shed a light on true long lasting love, not the fun crushes we usually sing about! I did not expect cans of tuna and chicken cutlets to inspire the line “My love for you is wrapped up in the day to day”, and thank the universe for this insight.

I prioritized other projects over this orphan single, and re-visited this a few weeks ago. OMG, I remember back in 2023 getting so disoriented and having tons of mixing versions, and not liking my voice in spots….But with several more years production experience under my belt, what once felt like shameful performance issues was really just lack of mixing experience. I worked quickly to clean it up, organize the tracks and even finally learned to master, which in my opinion sounds so much better than those auto-master ai services.

Well, I hope you like this fun, frivolous single! Let me know what you think in the comments. xo
