Wow, Love This Songwriter

I came across a friend’s facebook post. There was this video, with no comment, but I can safely assume they played a show in her little town called Truth Or Consequence, NM. I absolutely love this duo. What a voice.  So full, rich and haunting. I am listening to it from my native New York, and it transports me to another place.

I’m reminded of a point Carrie Brownstein made in her autobiography, “Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl”. The co-founder of Sleater Kinney wrote of music sub-cultures, and how “sounds” used to be steeped in their geography. She lamented how the internet melted those borders. Local Portland bands were instantly accessible to NYC bands, who influenced Athens sound with viral speed. Soon music began to sound homogeneous. I can’t dispute that overall, but this song makes a fine exception. I keep hitting the play button and begging the sound to take me there, wherever that is…Alaska? An icy mountain? A place where people walk barefoot outdoors? Where fabric flows and doesn’t hug the skin? To be fair, I’ve hardly paid attention to the lyrics yet. At this point, I don’t care if they’re singing DOODY over and over again, the music alone has transcended time and space.
