Where Did You Go?

Where Did You Go?

Sometimes I record a sketch of a song on my laptop video cam. I recently came across a video that I made about a year ago then forgot.  I sang “where did you go” over and over again.  Though it was lacking lyrical content, I was nagged by the feelings it churned up. It had to be. And so a few months later, bedazzled with my wife’s beautiful and dark background vocals, it is.  I want to play this with a full band so badly it hurts.

Where Did You Go?

Lyrics below.

Verse:  Where did you go?

You went away from me.

The man in the tie, collar and buttoned sleeves.

Your pockets are stuffed with clippings from magazines,

old poems and bunched up things.

CHORUS: We used to talk about our dreams.

We used to revel in the possibilities.

Under the fluorescent gleam.

In the diner where we were destined to be great.

You’d say it’s never too late.

Bridge:

In the nights, in the streets of the city you love

In the maze of buildings you’d roam with rock doves

Now I hear your footsteps rubbing out little notes

Wandering room to room, wandering with your ghosts

CHORUS: (see above)

Verse:

Where did you go? You went away from me.

The man in the tie, collar and buttoned sleeves.

I have your nose, your eyes, I have your cheeks.

You said you’d never leave.
