“The Man Before You”

The Man Before You

First of all, PLEASE crank up the volume when playing this. Then turn it up one more notch. Everything’s a bit too low in the mix. But it’s a rock song, damn it!

Moxie circa 1998- From left, Katy, Wendy, and Fala. Lindsey (drummer) not pictured.

This song was written in 1998.  It was recorded about 2 years later at Cloud 9 Studio with the band I played with at the time, Moxie.  I wrote this very quickly if I remember correctly….Perhaps mostly finished within 48 hours.  It was created on the foundation of a driving rhythmic guitar chords, which were so intoxicating to play.

I played it for the band right after writing it. They arranged it just as quickly. Drums, bass, vocals….like four psychic beings, little discussion was necessary. It pretty much stayed the same until we recorded, at which point Katy from Wales spontaneously added those background “ahhhhs” over the verses. Also, Wendy added some light, airy talk-vocals through the bridge in the middle. It was the epitome of music as a social experience.  “A song is just a shell”, this amazing guitarist I once jammed with said. The ladies of Moxie elevated it for live shows, and then again during the recording.

This blog is really my experiment to see how it will motivate me to finish NEW material….I am a few days away from “Kisses On Blankets By The Sea”….then hopefully just a few more days to lay the basic tracks.

In the meantime, I will occasionally post older material, because, heck, it’s a blog and shit has to be posted.

  1. Nice!!! I finally know all the words! (Only took 19 years! Haha) Great song, but when played live I couldn’t always understand all the lyrics (mainly due to venue sound, not Moxie!). That slow part still gets me. I love it!! This is great, Fa!
